Japanese Shiatsu

Shiatsu literally means finger (shi) pressure (atsu) and although Shiatsu is primarily pressure, usually applied with the thumbs, along the meridian lines, extensive soft tissue manipulation and both active and passive exercise and stretching may be part of the treatment. Extensive use of cutaneovisceral reflexes in the abdomen and on the back are also characteristics of Shiatsu. The emphasis of Shiatsu is the treatment of the whole meridian; however, effective points are also used. The therapist assesses the condition of the patient's body as treatment progresses. Therapy and diagnosis are one.

Myofascial Therapy

Myofascial Therapy is highly specialized stretching and fascial manipulation technique used to treat patients with a variety of soft tissue problems. Fascia is a thin connective tissue that covers all of the organs of the body. This tissue covers every muscle and every fiber within each muscle. All muscles stretching, then, is actually stretching of the fascia and the muscle, the myofacial unit. When muscle fibers are injured, the fibers and the fascia which surrounds it becomes short and tight. This uneven stress can be transmitted through the fascia to other parts of the body, causing pain and a variety of other symptoms in areas you often wouldn't expect. Myofascial Therapy treats these symptoms by releasing the uneven tightness in injured fascia.

Pre- and Post- Event Sports Massage

Training for a sporting event is probably the most grueling thing that one can partake.  While you train metabolic wastes build-up in the tissues, cells, interstitial spaces and if not properly dealt with can hinder your performance.  Metabolic wastes include lactic acid, nitrogen compounds, water, CO2, phosphates, sulfates, food additives etc.  These things are byproducts of aerobic and anaerobic respiration.  Sports massage can clean out these metabolic wastes, and improve oxygen and nutrient carrying capacity.  In addition exercise physiologists have determined that for optimum performance the most important thing is muscle length and flexibility, so incorporated in the massage is gentle stretching techniques.  Pre event is more invigorating warming up the tissue and preparing the body for the sporting event to come.  Post event is more pumping, cleansing, and sedative strokes clearing the tissues and cells of the above mentioned metabolic wastes promoting circulation to bring the bodies innate healing abilities to the forefront.
